In honor of Earth day today, I started thinking about being green and whether it even applies to dementia caregiving. Here is what I found....
Since person-centered care (involving all the unique aspects of a person in planning their care) is the way to go in dementia caregiving, I realized that this method is very green, organic or non-wasteful.
Think about it for a second--to care for someone with dementia, we need to look no further than their past life to plan their current situation. It doesn't cost much, it is easy and certainly not wasteful--very green indeed! We don't need fancy tools or expensive interventions. Using old photo albums or serving up a favorite snack couldn't be cheaper and easier.
As dementia caregivers, we may feel overwhelmed and think, "how will I cope with today" but in reality, we have so much available to us that we can use to help or comfort the person with dementia right in front of us!
So dementia caregivers, congratulate yourself for something you are doing right for the environment: taking care of your loved one with dementia in a green way.
Happy Earth Day!!
